Dr. Izabel E. T. de V. Souza has worked for more than 35 years as a certified interpreter (Conference, Legal and Medical). She has also been an interpreter educator at many universities such as Boston University, Cambridge College, etc. She served as president & executive director of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and launched the first national accredited medical interpreter certification program in the United States in 2009. She also served as Secretary General for the International Federation of Translators.
Intercultural Communication and the Work of Medical Interpreters
This workshop will showcase the results of an international study exploring the perspectives of 458 medical interpreters from 25 different countries, with respect to bridging the cultural gap between providers and patients.
How are interpreters working with healthcare providers to address cultural issues? What are the strategies utilized? What are the outcomes of their intervention?
